What do you see?

The story behind our logo.

Before we ever put pen to paper we began our visual-design journey with lots and lots of writing.

We started with a series of questions:

Who do we want to be?

What do we want to be known for?

What has God spoken over us as a church?

What's our purpose, vision, and values?

Who are we trying to reach?

What do we want people to feel when they come to Goodly?

The Little Oak Leaf

Out of the writing came discussion; out of discussion came simplification; from simplification came the need for representation.

We asked ourselves, “How do we visually represent what we found in answering these questions?

While we explored several options, the first object that caught our eye was an oak leaf. Oak trees speak of wisdom, steadfastness, and strength. Three things we love about the Lord. Plus there were several little prophetic nods about oaks that sparked joy for us. However, while we loved what we saw, it still didn’t feel quite right.

Early sketches for the discovery of our logo

Jesus invites us to live full-heartedly.

The heart, fullness & a full-hearted life

One theme that came up over and over in our answers was the recognition that God wants us to experience him fully. That life is best lived full. That part of our desire at Goodly is to introduce people to God in his fullness. And thus we started a search for some way to symbolize fullness and full-hearted living, while also bringing some of what we loved about the oak leaf.

We loved the heart in one of the leaf drawings. It was a brilliant evolution from the previous drafts, yet the leaf motif didn’t do a good job of representing fullness. After reviewing many versions, we loved the early drafts that would later become our logo. Some of us saw tree rings, which carried over the values we loved from the oak tree, while others saw a heart.

We loved the “loose” nature of the circles which spoke to the nature of life; that not everything is neat, tidy, or perfect. We loved the visual representation of expansion that comes from full-hearted living; that a full heart is made to expand and will impact those around us in our home, our neighborhood, and community.

Pick a color.
Any color.

(No, not that one.)

Color. It’s harder than you think.

  • “Can you make the orange a little less orangey?”

  • “Less forest green, more mint green.”

  • “That blue isn’t right, it needs to be more, uhm…”

We reviewed 34 different color swatches with a total of 136 colors. Sadly, none of them were quite right.

But on the 35th try, we found five colors we love. Every color speaks to something beautiful we hope people experience when coming to Goodly.
